Baking Steaks in the Kitchen

For dinner, my plan was to grill steaks and market-fresh corn on the cob on the grill. After marinating the steaks for a few hours and covering the corn cob with a slab of butter and a pinch of salt, it suddenly and violently started to rain. Considering our grill isn’t under the covered portion of our back deck, this puts a damper on my grilling plans, and I had to suddenly change my direction. After a few minutes on Google, I learned about baking steaks.

Needless to say, I was very intrigued and excited! With just a little more marinade, I was quickly on my way. First, I seared the steak in a pan on the stove to help hold in moisture. Then I placed the marinated and seared steak in an oven-safe container, threw fresh cut onion on top, and covered it with a lid. I began to bake the steak in the oven for about 30 minutes at 375 degrees. I removed the lid for the last 10 minutes of cooking to allow the onions to become a little caramelized. Along with the steaks, I also baked corn on the cob that I had also prepared in aluminum foil with a little moisture, butter, and salt.

This meal was very easy… much easier than the original idea of grilling, and because the steaks cooked slowly in their own juices, it left them very tender and juicy, not overcooked. My husband said that I could bake steaks in the oven anytime I wanted, so it seems that he was happy with the outcome too. Along with the steaks and corn, I served fresh green beans from the farmer’s market. Yes, I did cook them on the stove for about an hour but had I known beforehand, I would have probably baked them in the oven too.

Even though our dinner was over, apparently my baking wasn’t. At the request of my family and my stomach, I decided to bake cookies. For me, baking cookies calls for more than just pulling cookie dough out of the fridge. I have to make them from scratch, even down to milling my own flour. After pulling together my potential ingredients, we decided on Cherry Vanilla Butterscotch. This may seem like an odd combination, but they were the best cookies ever… both organic AND delicious!

This morning began with made-from-scratch waffles with fresh blueberries and strawberries. For lunch, we had sandwiches made from my special homemade bread with homemade peanut butter. I found myself starting my day baking in the kitchen, and now I am getting ready to end my day… baking in the kitchen, but I love it!

Have A Cleaner Home in Less Time

After having my children, I very quickly learned that I can no longer have a cleaner home in minutes, just before company comes over. Suddenly, it seemed that every time I would turn around, laundry, dishes, toilets, windows or floors were calling my name. I could never get caught up. I would feel that overwhelming feeling that comes when there is too much to do and not enough time to do it. I would just shut down. I didn’t know where to start, so I wouldn’t. That overwhelming feeling made me want to lye down and take a nap… an incredibly long nap; however, if I decided to push through and conquer, then it would seem that all I would do is clean, never leaving any time for anything that I actually enjoyed doing. This is when I learned about the House Cleaning Schedule.

How One Simple Act Influenced My Life

When I was a small girl, I would get a birthday card from a lady simply known as “The Birthday Lady.” I remember getting one every year. When it was near or around my birthday, I had come to expect it. Although there were no computers to remind us of special dates, it would never come late. It would either be a week early or just on time. Every year, she had to physically write MY NAME on her new calendar. That means that she probably didn’t just think of me on my special day. She probably thought of me while she filled out her new calendar for the year and through the entire month of September. The cards that she sent were simple, pre-made cards, with no extra handwriting. The signature “The Birthday Lady” was scribbled at the bottom.” I can remember laying on my bed analyzing the signature, hoping to get a glimpse of who this mysterious woman was or what she was like. My imagination took me everywhere…

How to Not Eat Fried Worms

I love the smell of fresh cooked bacon, especially cooked to a crisp. I would cook it until it was almost burned. I love the way it would break apart between my teeth like a potato chip. I can almost taste it now… I can remember the taste of “extra pepperoni” on my pizza, or the salted Canadian Bacon on my morning biscuit. It has been since August, 2003 that I have last tasted these things, and I will never experience those exact tastes again. Although my taste buds may be sad, my body is gleaming with happiness…

Deadly Cure?

Did you know that studies show that about 27% of the overall population is denying vaccinations? The government is in a panic, because they have an overstock of vaccines that the public is simply refusing to take. More and more people are on the rise to investigate and question vaccines and the long-term implications of them.

How Much Milk Can You Drink?

Did you know that in order to get your sufficient amount of vitamin D3 you would have to consume 50 glasses of milk in one day? Vitamin D3 is a big key in the well-being of you and your family. Normally, vitamin D3 comes from the sun. When the sun hits your skin, your body starts to produce antimicrobial peptides. These peptides greatly improve your immune function. If you have a shortage of peptides in your body, you increase your chances for bacterial and viral infections such as the cold and flu. That is why the winter is considered the “cold and flu season.” Research also shows that a deficiency in vitamin D3 can also aid in a number of autoimmune diseases, as well as, osteoporosis, depression, tuberculosis and more. Further studies have shown that vitamin D3 is also incredibly protective against H1N1. Continue reading

Decluttering – Part One

“You are not your stuff, and if your stuff is not helping you create the life, mood, and harmony that you want, then what’s it doing in your life?” –Peter Walsh

Springtime is almost here, and we have decided to get a jump-start on our spring cleaning.” We were encouraged after our recent visit to a friend’s house who, upon moving to a smaller home, has pretty much gotten rid of everything and started over. It was so nice to walk into their new home and to not feel so overwhelmed with stuff, which is the feeling that I get every day in our home. As I began to walk around the house, I started to pray that God would help me and give me wisdom on what I really need and don’t need, and I can’t begin to tell you how much He has opened my eyes. How I Got My Baby To Sleep Through the Night

The best advise that I received after becoming a mom for the first time was this: “You didn’t go to live with your baby, your baby came to live with you.” –Dr. Leila Denmark Recently, I had the fabulous opportunity to help another friend get her newborn baby to sleep through the night using Dr. Denmark’s incredible, infamous routine. Dr. Denmark is a local, retired Pediatrician that is going to be turning 112 on February 1st, 2010, and, as of the time of this post, is the 57th oldest person in the world according to the Guinness book of world records. From referral, my friend came to me to seek out any help that I could offer to get her baby to sleep. I was honored, and we immediately began the baby on a new day and night routine.
